The San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado are of mostly volcanic origin, resulting in richer soils than in the mountains to the North that are mostly granitic – resulting in some of the largest Rocky Mountain wildflower specimens in the state. See the photo above…I would hesitate to take a group of people on a photography workshop in areas like this – It’s hard enough for me to avoid trampling on what I’m trying to photograph! As for my Sheltie dog, I keep him on a leash – Wilderness regulations, you know – and he sits quietly with ears perked up to hear any approaching thunder storms. After I took this picture, we ran for the timber, chased by bolts of lightning. The hazards of photography…
