Through these Aspen trees are Colorado’s most famous mountains –  East and West Maroon Peaks, each over 14,000′ high, towering almost a mile above Maroon Lake. The maroon colored rock gives these peaks their names; the unstable rock makes for dangerous climbing. As for me, I prefer the view from the bottom, like the many people who come to visit this National Recreation Area in White River National Forest near Aspen, Colorado. As popular and crowded as it is, it is still worth coming to see what is one of the most beautiful scenes in the West. As many times as I have come to photograph it, I never tire of seeing it, each time in a different way. The Aspen through which I photographed the Maroon Bells are gone – an avalanche took them out over 25 years ago…
